Empowering traditional heritage through design to support rural women.
HMW
How might we leverage the characteristics of cloth-paste painting and household nature to provide families with a customized DIY experience kit for family portraits, fostering stronger family connections through the exploration of intangible cultural heritage, and revitalizing public interest in this traditional art form?
The story
Background
Cloth-paste painting, a traditional Chinese art, is fading due to limited public interest and declining practitioners. This project, part of the Rural Mom Acceleration Program with Starbucks, aims to revitalize the craft while supporting rural women through employment opportunities.
Result
The project developed a customizable DIY kit for families, featuring tools and materials for creating cloth paste paintings. Through careful research and iterative design, the kit simplifies the crafting process, making it accessible to beginners while preserving the essence of the art form

Prototype & Iterate
One of the reasons for the decline of the intangible cultural heritage of cloth paste painting is its highly complex and difficult-to-learn production process.
To make this art form more accessible on a product level, I designed the DIY kit as a modular, standardized product. Users only need to complete simple assembly and hand-gluing tasks, though a certain level of crafting ability is still required.
To address this, I recorded the performance and feedback of testers with different skill levels during their product experience and iterated on the design to create the final product.
Value Proposition & Business Model Canvas
To ensure that the industrialization of this product design can bring tangible benefits to the "moms," I used the Business Model Canvas to plan future production costs, sales channels, and more. Additionally, I defined the product's purpose through brand value positioning.

Bring users the experience of connecting family relationships with cloth paste paintings, everyone can be a master of cloth paste paintings.
